The Oserok Way

Description

We offer organized Tanzania Cultural Safaris that will immerse travelers in the real Tanzanian culture. The trip includes a visit to Chaga tribes, Masai tribes, and Hadzabes bushmen tribes. Small groups of hadzabe bushmen live around lake eyasi. Their language resembles the click languages of other bushmen further south in the kalahari. Their small population was seriously threatened, in particular during the period when Julius Nyerere tried to introduce his Ujima policy. The tribe resisted the forcible settlement policies and nowadays most of their children have never seen a doctor or school – the bush provides for all their needs.

Tourists will see their simple bush homes where the tree canopy alone or a cave provides them shelter. They live entirely off the bush and from hunting, generally small antelopes and baboons. In rainy seasons, gazelles and antelopes come down from the Ngorongoro or Serengeti to their lush bush lands thereby offering them richer pickings. In the recent past, their hunting activities were resented by trophy hunters and tried to stop their “illegal” hunting.

Tour Plan

Expand All
Day 1 Arrive- Chagga Village tour

A trip to a Chagga village starts at the Chagga cave – This is under a typical Chagga homestead , set in a banana plantation–descend a steep ladder into the tunnel which was carved out to protect the livestock and women from Maasai raids –The tunnel which is wide enough for the tall Maasais, suddenly narrows and it was here that the Chagga were waiting with their spears to kill the marauders (it is said that the Maasai believe that all the cattle in the world are theirs by right).

Behind the narrow space there are even shelves carved into the rock for the bodies of the dead Maasai. The cave then widens out into a circular area where the women, children & livestock would be hiding, (not for the claustrophobic)-then we go on to the traditional blacksmith’s where you will see the men working making tools as they have done for centuries, pushing the bellows with their feet.

Day 2 Masai Village Tour

After breakfast, we go on a walking safari where your guide will explain the past and contemporary life of the Tanzania Maasai. Get more information about the culinary culture of the Maasai while sampling a traditional tea (chai) prepared on the wood fire. A tasty lunch with a variety of local food highlights will end the activities inside the village. Maasai warriors will guide you along their paths and explain typical medicinal plants, extraordinary trees, tracks and the local wildlife. Also learn to use local tools, hunting techniques and fire preparation as part your bush excursion. At sunset, a group of Maasai men and women will gather around for a traditional sing & dance performances. A great BBQ-Buffet at the camp fire will provide you an unforgettable evening under the starry sky.

Day 3 Masai Village- Tengeru Village

After breakfast, depart for Tengeru for a day of cultural tour. In the village, there are two primary schools. One is for handicap children and the other is a teaching practice primary school. You have the chance to play with the kids and get to know their way of life. We also visit an old stone quarry site developed after WWII where more than 100 refugees from Poland were brought to Arusha. Most of them died of malaria and influenza and were buried in this area. In the evening, we drive back to Arusha for accommodation and overnight at Mount Meru Hotel. Full board meals.

Day 4 Monduli Juu Cultural

After breakfast, we depart from Arusha with picnic lunch boxes and drive to Monduli. We start walking from there through a forest where an armed ranger will be guiding us. Buffalos, Elephants, and other wildlife can be seen in this forest. After lunch, we proceed to the summit of Monduli Mountain and enjoy the great views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru.

Day 5 Lake Eyasi – Cultural Interaction

After breakfast, we traverse the rough road to lake eyasi, another soda lake in the rift valley. We arrive in afternoon for a cultural interaction with the Tatoga tribe (a very interesting tribe). Our Tatoga guide at the village will lead the tour. We explore the dry and rugged landscape area on foot, which is still inhabited by a small group of bushmen: the Hadzabe or Watindiga. These tribes still live in bands, hunting with bows and arrows; gathering roots, tubers and wild fruits, just as how humans did to survive 10,000 years ago. Another interesting tribe in this area is the Datoga (also called the Barabaig or Mang’ati). Initially, they were exercising a lot of rivalry over grazing land with the Maasai tribe.

Day 6 Lake Eyasi – Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Cultural)

We start early in the morning for a hunting tour with the bushmen then back to the lodge for breakfast. Afterwards, we depart for Ngorongoro Crater seeing wildlife en route. You’ll stop briefly on one of the viewpoints on the rim of the crater to enjoy it splendid views.

Day 7 Masai Village Visit- Olduvai Gorge

Drive to the Masai village with an optional stop- over at Olduvai Gorge – a famous historical site for a visit. A resident anthropologist will give a lecture about human evolution and life at this place 20milion years ago.

Day 8 Mto wa Mbu - Arusha

After breakfast, drive to Mto wa mbu for a cultural tour. Mto Wa Mbu Village has a very active cultural programme that seeks to show visitors the traditional way of life of the villagers through various activities and also a range of community projects that are in place. You can visit top spots in the area, taste Tanzanian foods and experience authentic cultural interaction. There are a number of excellent walking, hiking and biking tours offered in the village ranging in length from a couple of hours to a full day. In the afternoon, we drive back to Arusha.

Serengeti safari without the rush It was a 7 day family safari with us and our 2 adult children. We all had a fantastic time helped by Alpha and Josephete being excellent driver and guides. They seemed to be able to predict where animals were heading and be there. Rather than using the radio and following the crowd, we took it slow and saw so many more animals and birds that we would have otherwise missed. We stopped for a bird, saw several others, then realised we were right next to 6 dik diks that were almost invisible in the scrub. We saw 2 crossing events and other unexpected interactions like an elephant chasing off 3 lions and elephant baby’s cavorting and playing with each other. We saw a serval cat and followed it for a while then saw it pounce and catch dinner. Circle of life in action. The daughters got right into bird spotting and both the guides were very knowledgeable and helpful and quick with identifying, while not being worried to contradict and make suggestions. Both of them were conscientious and sensitive to our needs on the whole safari and we had a wonderful time. I would recommend them to anyone wanting a great safari experience.

Expertise and care by a true professional. We had an incredible family trip to Marangu waterfalls and a safari in Tarangire National Park, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide than Alpha. From the very beginning, Alpha took the time to understand what we wanted from our trip. Rather than pushing a particular itinerary, he gave us all the information we needed, explained our options, and helped us choose what would work best for our family and the time we had. Throughout the trip, he embodied the warmth, kindness, and hospitality of the Tanzanian people. His knowledge of the wildlife, culture, plants and local area made every part of the journey more meaningful. He is Masai after all!). He welcomed our endless questions, never rushed us, and always made sure we had plenty of time to enjoy each stop and capture great photos from the best locations. On safari, Alpha and his team were exceptional. Their ability to spot wildlife was incredible- they noticed animals we would never have seen on our own. They thoughtfully chose different routes to avoid the crowds, giving us better viewing opportunities and a much more authentic experience. Thanks to their expertise, we saw an amazing variety of wildlife and had far lots of great sightings. What impressed us most was that their care extended beyond the tour itself. When we experienced a hotel mishap, Alpha stepped in to help, even though it wasn’t his responsibility. That level of genuine care says a great deal about the kind of person he is. His entire team was equally friendly, professional, and dedicated to making our experience special. Together they made our visit to Tanzania truly unforgettable. We wholeheartedly recommend Alpha to anyone visiting Tanzania. If you’re looking for someone who is knowledgeable, trustworthy, genuinely caring, and passionate about sharing his country, look no further. We will definitely be back, and when we do, Alpha will be our first call

Had a great day Together with my daughter we did trips and tour to the waterfall with Alpha van Oserok, with lunch at a Chagga tribe and with a coffee ceremony. Alpha picked us up at our hotel and together we walked to the waterfall. Along the way he explained a lot about all the plants, trees and animals that could be seen there. He is a relaxed and extremely experienced guide and we had a great day.

Trip of a lifetime! Thank you Alfa!! We cannot say enough about our incredible Tanzania adventure safari!! Alfa curated an 8-day safari to include a first day visit to the hot springs and local eatery, then 6 days on safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Mayanara, and a visit with a bush tribe and an iron working tribe. The lodgings and food were lovely and the weather was perfect! It was an amazing cultural experience for our family as well as a stunning photo safari in this lovely country. We saw the Big 5 in close proximity and countless other animals. Alfa and his driver Renatos were knowledgeable, attentive, engaging and professional….they made the trip extra special and we are extremely grateful for the memories we made. Asante sana!
