  • Establishment: Founded in 1951, Mkomazi National Park faced financial challenges and didn’t receive widespread recognition until 1989.
  • Location: Located on the southern tip of the Sahel, it shares its northern border with Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, forming one of the largest protected ecosystems.

Landscape and Scenery:

  • Mountains: Northwest offers a view of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Pare and Usambara mountains in the south create a dramatic backdrop.
  • Vegetation: Features classic arid areas with gray-green nyika bush, old baobab trees, and rocky hills. Other areas transition into savannah forests with umbrella acacias and flat grassland valleys known as mbugas.

  • Animal Diversity: Mkomazi is home to a thinly populated but diverse range of wildlife, including giraffes, antelopes, small kudu, impala, Grant’s gazelle, elephants, buffalo, and numerous predators like lion, leopard, and cheetah.

Dry Season (June to October): Ideal for general wildlife viewing. The weather is favorable, and this is when visitors can witness the park’s diverse wildlife.

Wet Season (November to May): The scenery is at its best during this period, with lush landscapes and excellent views of the mountains. It’s also the best time to witness elephants migrating into the park from Tsavo.
