The Oserok Way

Mount Meru is the second highest in Tanzania and the fourth highest in Africa, which is 4566 metres and most beautiful volcanoes. The route to the summit passes through parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone and moorland. Finally, the summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge which provides stunning views of the ash cone several thousand feet below.

There are also great views of the nearby Mt. Kilimanjaro. This climb is used by many as an acclimatization for a Mt. Kilimanjaro climb but it is an excellent trek in its own right. It also requires fewer days to climb so those without enough time to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro may consider this option. In addition, it is proportionally less expensive than a Mt. Kilimanjaro climb.

The mountain in located inside of Arusha National Park. Here, over 400 species of birds, rhino, elephant, buffalo, baboon, warthog, black and white Colobus monkey and duiker are all found in this delightful “gem amongst parks.” The group will be accompanied on Mount Meru by a Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate guide, a mandatory park ranger and porters. On the mountain we use dormitory style huts. A sleeping bag and mat are required for the huts. The mountain has only one route to climb, the Momella route. This can be achieved in either three or four days.

  • 4566 meters in height. Second tallest mountain in Tanzania!
  • Very rewarding ascend at SUNRISE
  • Socialist Peak (Meru's main peak)
  • You CAN climb Meru by yourself or in a small team (not possible on Kilimanjaro)
  • Fewer people have been at the top of Mt. Meru than on Mt. Everest.
  • Different vegetation zones over several days
  • Little Meru (Meru's second highest peak at 3800m)

Day 1 Mt. meru : Momella Gate - Miriakamba Hut

The day starts with a transfer to Momella gate at 1500m. After the registration, the trek will start. Because Mt Meru is in the middle of Arusha National Park, the beginning of the trek is also a walking safari. During this trek you have chances to spot wild Giraffes, Buffalo, Warthog, Elephants and a huge variety of birds as you continue a steady climb through the montane forest.

In roughly 2 hours you will reach the Maio Falls, where you can stretch your legs and enjoy the view. After the falls, we will do a bit more trekking and hike to the “fig tree arch”. This fig tree is an unusual tree formation created by the wild fig Ficus Thonningii. Here we will enjoy a nice, picknick lunch.

Once our belly’s are filled, the trek continues through less dense forest. Here you might be able to spot a variety of monkeys including the famous black and white Colobus. Within another two hours of trekking we will reach our final destination of today, Miriakamba Hut on Mt Meru. Afternoon tea, snacks and beautiful sunset-view awaits you.

Day 2 Miriakamba Hut - Saddle Hut

In the morning we will start trekking from Miriakamba hut to Saddle hut. The trek continues on wooden steps along a steep track. The trek may be short, but it will be very steep. Upon trekking, the temperature drops noticably due to the altitude gain.

Slowly, the vegetation on Mt Meru will change from rainforest to heather and moorland. Todays hike takes you to “Mgongo wa Tembo” (elephant back) at a height of 3,200 m after approximately 2 hours. Here we will take a break, relax and enjoy the surroundings. After another short hike we will find our way to Saddle hut at 3570m where we will have lunch.

The rest of the afternoon can be spend relaxing OR trekking towards the second highest peak of Mt Meru, Little Meru. This is an amazing place to watch the sunset and offers fantastic views over Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro! If you choose to visit little meru (3820m), you will ascent another 250m meters from Saddle hut. Trekking to Little Meru and back usually takes another 3,5-4,5 hours.

Dinner will be waiting for you upon your return to Saddle Hut. Make sure you go to bed early, as the night will be short and the next day’s journey will be long and tiring.

Day 3 Saddle Hut - SOCIALIST PEAK - Miriakamba Hut

Today is summit day! The most difficult and certainly the most rewarding day of the climb. Summit day means an early awakening. Our trek will start from 1:30 with a steep climb to Rhino Point.

From Rhino Point (at 3820m), the path continues along an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4350 m). Depending on the time we will stay at cobra point for an amazing sunrise or climb further to Mt Meru: Socialist Peak to watch the sunrise there! The path to socialist peak is quite challenging and some climbing skills will come in handy here. The path goes along the crater rim, where you’ll trek on frozen volcanic ash and rocks, before reaching the summit.

Standing at the peak you will enjoy the breath-taking view of the sun rising above Mt Kilimanjaro as well as a fantastic view of Mt Meru’s crater with its steep sides and the “ash cone” in the middle. YOU MADE IT!

After our summit we will start a fast decent through open grassland and mixed forest, towards Miriakamba Hut. Here we will have a good rest eat and sleep.

Day 4 Miriakamba Hut - Momella Gate

Today will be a relaxed day as we will only have to descent a small part. This day is the perfect day to enjoy the beautiful green surroundings of Arusha National Park and stopping at a few more places than the days before.

With still soar feet from the day before, we will start a slow descent. During the descent we will have good chances of seeing wildlife like on the first day. You might be able to spot wild Giraffes, Buffalo, Warthog, Elephants, birds and monkeys during this day’s walking-safari.

Upon reaching Momella Gate, you’ll say goodbye to the crew and be transferred back to your accommodation in Arusha.

Oserok Trips will guarantee your trip to Tanzania is a magical, once in a lifetime experience! If you have been considering a trip to Tanzania, and are still on the fence, I am here to tell you not to worry and go for it! It is a magical place, not only because of the incredible animal and plant life, or the amazing landscapes, but above all, because of the wonderful and friendly people. The man who will guarantee this trip will be an incredible, once in a lifetime experience, is Alpha and his great team at Oserok Trips. Even if you only have a few hours, Alpha will fill them with activities as best as possible, and if you are on a two-week vacation, your time will be organized in great detail according to your needs and interests. Alpha is a wonderful guide and companion for whatever kind of trip you have envisioned. He will pick you up from the airport, arrange accommodation with local residents, answer your questions, take care of you as best as he can, take care of all your needs, and dispel any concerns. Oserok Trips can also recommend various activities in each area you visit, but beyond that they will also show you the details that could easily go unnoticed by visitor. As I write this, I already want to go back, explore the places I didn’t have enough time to see, and smell grass of the Serengeti again. My husband, daughter and I traveled around Tanzania for two weeks. We spent the first eight days with Alpha and his great team, the next with his wonderful life companion and guide Dominika. We drove through Tarangire National Park, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area under the care of Alpha, a skilled driver, and a cook who prepared incredible meals for us even in the middle of the wilderness. There was no moment when we did not feel safe, even when a dozen lions were hunting a buffalo a few meters away from us. We joked that even this amazing event was planned by our guides for 4:06 pm on January 23, 2024. Witnessing such a hunt, of course, can never be guaranteed, but with a team like Oserok Trips, their expert eyes will point out every lion's ear in the waist-deep grass. After some time you too will learn to spot whole groups of animals thanks to their experienced eye! Don’t let the fatigue of travel, the dust and mud, and everything that deviates from the routine of your everyday life, dissuade you from taking this trip. Don’t delay (like us) and the rest will be taken care of by Alpha and his team at Oserok Trips.
Great local community option for those after an authentic experience Communications prompt and accurate - pay attention to the description to ensure it is for you. I had a fantastic day visiting a Maasai tribal village and surrounds but be aware this is not the sort of tour where you "attend a show" of the lifestyle - you join the tribe members for part of their day which I found really interesting and informative despite the language barrier. Employs local staff and supports the community which for me is a bonus. Wouldn't hesitate to book for a longer tour in the area if I get the chance.

A nice day to remember Alpha, the manager is very friendly and patient. I had one day for a trip in Arusha with my niece and a small budget and he accommodated my needs. We went to the hotsprings and visited a park that isn't in his offer, but he was able to arrange it. I did not had to take care of anything. In addition, Alpha is.keen to exchange about his rich culture and his full of interesting histories, but he also left us enjoy the activities and understands when you need privacy, I appreciate that. In a nutshell, I really recommend the Oserok trips.

Waterfalls and coffee My dad and I went on the waterfalls and coffee tour with Alpha and the oserok team this summer. The tour was perfect from start to finish, alpha organized everything better than we could have imagined. He picked us up and took us on a beautiful drive up the mountain and explained/ answered questions about the landscape as we went. On the hike we were with Lebahati, he was a wonderful and charming guide. He was able to keep us going at an enjoyable pace and told us many fun y and interesting facts on the way! The lunch after the hike was great too- many different dishes and we had so much fun learning about local kahawa!! I could’t recommend any other company more!!

Absolutely wonderful experiences. Highly recommended! We did the Kilimanjaro, 4 days safari and a coffee plantation tour - all with Alpha and his team at Oserok Trips. We are so lucky that we chose his company (based on recommendation from a friend), as our journeys was absolutely wonderful! On Kilimanjaro, they was so helpful making sure that we reach the summit. The food on the mountain was so delicious thanks to Salim - the chef. The whole crew was perfect - always cheering us up, always smiling. And then the safari - Alpha made sure that we get a solid guide/driver who knows everything there is to know about the animals. Always in a good mood, and he spotted animals that we would definitely miss. We saw so many lions, some of them eating their prey and one time we saw the hunt for zebras! We even saw a family of cheetahs. The safari was one of the best experiences of our lives, I'll definitely come back if I ever have children, so they can see it too. And it'll definitely be with Oserok Trips again. Highly recommended, you won't make a mistake!

Excellent guide!

Materuni waterfall and coffe trip we went to Materuni waterfall and on a coffee tour with Alfi as guide☺️ It was a fantastic experience with beautiful nature! Alfi gave us extensive information along the way about the place and the flora. We later got to make coffee with the local population, which was great fun and educational. The day also included a traditional Swahili lunch which was very good???? Really recommend! not a crazy price either!
