The Oserok Way

Description

Rongai Route Kilimanjaro 7 Days Hiking

Rongai route begins in the northern side of Kilimanjaro Mountain, 45km from Moshi town or 69km from Arusha. Rongai is stated to be one of the most beautiful routes that start from the Northern side, in comparison to others this is the easiest route and its popularity has been increasing tremendously over the years. The route hosts a variety of spectacular landscapes together with different plants and animal’s species which make it one of the best sought after route of the Northern side. The typical duration for this trip is 6 days. But mostly the hikers prefer to take one day more, i.e., the 7 days to make the success rate higher. Rongai is scenically more beautiful than that of Marangu, and the difference is that when Marangu offers the hut facilities, the Rongai offers the tents to rest and make the overnight stay. At the end of each day you would find your tents pitched by the porters.

Highlights
  • Low crowds
  • Gradual slope
  • Highly recommended for newbie trekkers
  • Less rain expected on the trek
  • Not varied scenery

Expand All
Day 1 Moshi to Rongai Gate (Nalemoru) to Simba Camp

Drive to the attractive wooden village of Nalemoru (about 4 hours including a stop to get permits at Marangu). Your expedition would be started only when; your porters get prepared. At the beginning, you would hike through wide path that wind through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest where you can encounter a considerable numbers of wild species. You would have your first camp at the end of the moorland zone where the forest gets thin. The exotic views of the Kenyan plains from here would enthrall you. Elevation: 2000m to 2650m, Distance: 6km, Hiking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Montane Forest,

Day 2 Simba Camp to Second Cave

Elevation: 2650m to 3450m, Distance: 6km, Walking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Moorland The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim.

Day 3 Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Elevation: 3450m to 3600m, Distance: 9km, Walking Time: 2-3 hours, Habitat: Semi-desert, Head out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant Senecios nearby.

Day 4 Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Turn Hut

Elevation: 3600m to 4330m, Distance: 6km, Walking Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Semi-desert A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb views. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Turn, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization. If you are spending an extra day on the mountain, you will camp for two nights here. You can hike up and around Mawenzi for your acclimatization hike.

Day 5 Mawenzi Turn hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 4330m to 4750m, Distance: 9km, Hiking Time: 4-5 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert Cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent very early.

Day 6 Kibo Camp to Summit and Horombo Hut

Elevation: 4700m to 5895m & down to 3700m, Distance: 6km up & 15km down, Hiking Time: 6-8 hours’ up & 15km down, Habitat: Alpine Desert Very early in the morning (midnight about 2am), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s Point located on the crater rim (elevation 5700m). Continuing ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. There are unbelievable views at every turn. Have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends and family. Start descending and take a stop at Kibo for lunch before exploring the Horombo encampment.

The day of summit is the most difficult day of hiking as you have to start earlier to reach on the top to see the sun rise, so take the bare necessities like the headlamp/ flashlight, the warm clothes and the camera with you. Remember you have to trek in the night and reach on the top short after or before the sunrise to see the best of the Kilimanjaro beauty. Make sure, you may be tired, so it is always recommended to go slow to the summit.

Day 7 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, to Moshi

Elevation: 3700m to 1700m, Distance: 20km, Hiking Time: 4-5 hours, Habitat: Forest After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut.From there you would have to descend through lush forest path to attend our destination: the National Park gate at Marangu. Remember the lower elevations can be wet and muddy, so descend slowly and don’t wear long dress: The Shorts and t-shirts will be very comfortable at the time. Kimanaa Safaris vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your Hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour).

Serengeti safari without the rush It was a 7 day family safari with us and our 2 adult children. We all had a fantastic time helped by Alpha and Josephete being excellent driver and guides. They seemed to be able to predict where animals were heading and be there. Rather than using the radio and following the crowd, we took it slow and saw so many more animals and birds that we would have otherwise missed. We stopped for a bird, saw several others, then realised we were right next to 6 dik diks that were almost invisible in the scrub. We saw 2 crossing events and other unexpected interactions like an elephant chasing off 3 lions and elephant baby’s cavorting and playing with each other. We saw a serval cat and followed it for a while then saw it pounce and catch dinner. Circle of life in action. The daughters got right into bird spotting and both the guides were very knowledgeable and helpful and quick with identifying, while not being worried to contradict and make suggestions. Both of them were conscientious and sensitive to our needs on the whole safari and we had a wonderful time. I would recommend them to anyone wanting a great safari experience.

Expertise and care by a true professional. We had an incredible family trip to Marangu waterfalls and a safari in Tarangire National Park, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide than Alpha. From the very beginning, Alpha took the time to understand what we wanted from our trip. Rather than pushing a particular itinerary, he gave us all the information we needed, explained our options, and helped us choose what would work best for our family and the time we had. Throughout the trip, he embodied the warmth, kindness, and hospitality of the Tanzanian people. His knowledge of the wildlife, culture, plants and local area made every part of the journey more meaningful. He is Masai after all!). He welcomed our endless questions, never rushed us, and always made sure we had plenty of time to enjoy each stop and capture great photos from the best locations. On safari, Alpha and his team were exceptional. Their ability to spot wildlife was incredible- they noticed animals we would never have seen on our own. They thoughtfully chose different routes to avoid the crowds, giving us better viewing opportunities and a much more authentic experience. Thanks to their expertise, we saw an amazing variety of wildlife and had far lots of great sightings. What impressed us most was that their care extended beyond the tour itself. When we experienced a hotel mishap, Alpha stepped in to help, even though it wasn’t his responsibility. That level of genuine care says a great deal about the kind of person he is. His entire team was equally friendly, professional, and dedicated to making our experience special. Together they made our visit to Tanzania truly unforgettable. We wholeheartedly recommend Alpha to anyone visiting Tanzania. If you’re looking for someone who is knowledgeable, trustworthy, genuinely caring, and passionate about sharing his country, look no further. We will definitely be back, and when we do, Alpha will be our first call

Had a great day Together with my daughter we did trips and tour to the waterfall with Alpha van Oserok, with lunch at a Chagga tribe and with a coffee ceremony. Alpha picked us up at our hotel and together we walked to the waterfall. Along the way he explained a lot about all the plants, trees and animals that could be seen there. He is a relaxed and extremely experienced guide and we had a great day.

Trip of a lifetime! Thank you Alfa!! We cannot say enough about our incredible Tanzania adventure safari!! Alfa curated an 8-day safari to include a first day visit to the hot springs and local eatery, then 6 days on safari to Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Mayanara, and a visit with a bush tribe and an iron working tribe. The lodgings and food were lovely and the weather was perfect! It was an amazing cultural experience for our family as well as a stunning photo safari in this lovely country. We saw the Big 5 in close proximity and countless other animals. Alfa and his driver Renatos were knowledgeable, attentive, engaging and professional….they made the trip extra special and we are extremely grateful for the memories we made. Asante sana!
